A personalized song as a gift: how to choose, what to write, how to give it

A song written about one person is one of the few gifts that gets played again years later. There are two good ways to get one: commission a songwriter, or make it yourself in an app. They suit different moments, and this guide is honest about both. It ends with lyrics you can adapt tonight and what the person sees when they open it.

We could not load Songfinch's own pricing page on 1 November 2026, so we state no Songfinch price or turnaround. Freelance songwriters on gig marketplaces set their own prices and terms, so check each listing.

Which to choose? If you want a professional musician's interpretation and you have a week, commission one. If you want to say it in your own words, try three styles before deciding, send it on the day, or make one for every birthday in the family, make it yourself.

What to write: the three detail rule

The difference between a song about "a wonderful wife" and a song about her is detail. Before you write a line, note three things:

  1. A place. Where you met, a kitchen, a car, a city.
  2. A habit. How they laugh, what they always say, the song they sing wrong.
  3. A moment. The night something changed.

Put the place and the habit in the verse, the moment in the bridge, and their name in the chorus. Midhull's Dedicate it mode asks for exactly this kind of detail and writes it into the lyrics for you; Write it lets you write every word yourself.

Anniversary, ten years, slow soul. Prompt: "Slow soul, warm Rhodes, brushed drums, male vocal, tender."

[Verse]
Ten years since the bus stop on Delancey Street
You were reading backwards in the window seat
I said something stupid and you laughed at me
Ten years, and you still laugh at me

[Chorus]
Nora, it was always you
Every wrong turn led me through
Ten more years, then ten again
Nora, it was always you

Wedding, first dance, acoustic. Prompt: "Acoustic folk pop, fingerpicked guitar, soft strings, duet, warm."

[Chorus]
Here in the middle of everyone we know
Hold on to me, we'll take it slow
Whatever comes, whatever we lose
I choose you, I choose you

Thank you to a dad, country. Prompt: "Warm country, acoustic guitar, pedal steel, male vocal, mid tempo."

[Verse]
You never said much when you drove me to school
You'd turn up the radio and break every rule
Now I've got a kid and a car of my own
I turn up the radio the whole way home

[Chorus]
Thanks, Dad, for the things you never said
For the light in the hall when I went to bed
I didn't know then, but I know it now
Thanks, Dad, you showed me how

Long distance, city pop. Prompt: "City pop, funky bass, bright electric piano, female vocal, 100 BPM, night drive."

[Chorus]
Seven hours and a different moon
Your morning is my afternoon
Call me when the city sleeps
I'll keep the night, you keep the keys

How they receive it

You send a link. On their phone or computer it opens in the browser with:

  • The song's own cover, made for that song from a real photograph, a typeface and a layout.
  • The lyrics, lit up in time with the music.
  • Your name, your note, and a label that says the song was made with AI.

They can react, save it, and answer with a song of their own. When they do, both songs join into one split cover, yours on one side and theirs on the other. You can choose to send it now or schedule it for the day, and add your occasions to the calendar so Midhull reminds you, five days ahead by default.

Make it once, keep it forever

With a plan, every song you make can be downloaded as MP3 or WAV, and Midhull never locks downloads later, even if you change plans. Your free first song stays saved on your phone. A gift song should be yours to keep.
